Buying branded goods wholesale: what resellers should look for

From supplier checks to invoices and batch information – the key points for clean B2B purchasing of branded goods.

Whether you run a retail store, an online shop or sell on marketplaces: reselling branded goods depends on reliable sources. A low price alone is not enough – origin, documentation and availability have to be right.

1. Check the supplier

A reputable wholesaler is clearly identifiable: a complete legal notice, commercial register entry, a valid VAT ID and a reachable contact person. EU VAT IDs can be checked via the European Commission's VIES system.

2. Proper invoices

Every delivery should be documented with a proper invoice – with full company details of both parties, item descriptions, quantities and, where useful, EAN. These documents matter for tax purposes and also serve as your proof of origin.

3. Origin and batches

Ask which market the goods come from and whether batch or best-before information is available. For cosmetics, drugstore items and food this is important for traceability and remaining shelf life.

4. Assess availability realistically

Stock lists are a snapshot. Before ordering, clarify lead times, quantities and whether an item is available repeatedly – for predictable sales this often matters more than a one-off clearance lot.

Checklist
